cannot change my email address

Hi, I am trying to change my email address. I thought I would have to first add a new one, then switch to that as primary one.
Went to settings, account, put in a new email address and it won't take it. I get a message in a pink box on top of page saying "Could not add email address.".
Same if I try to fist delete my primary one (which was expected).

I am on Mac OsX and got the same with either Firefox, Chrome or Safari.

    I am also having this problem. We I try to enter a new email address, I get message a top of page saying "could not add email address." Please address issue.

    You most likely have already registered an account using that email address.

    I have another problem: I could enter the new email-address, but could not change it to my primary address. The old address will expire 1 August 2012. Any idea what I could do?

    can you not make it your primary address after you get the confirmation email? That should be the only thing that prevents it.

    The system has verified my primary address, which expires. I didn't manage to verify my second address.

    Ok, Im having the same problem. I can't change my primary email address and I need to have an .edu address for school. I mistakenly used my yahoo account. I need to change this ASAP. Any help would be much appreciated

    which problem do you have? You can't add a secondary e-mail or you can't change that to be your primary one? Please be specific, also, about which errors are getting displayed.

    I can't either. I would love to have 2 email addresses up there (a primary and a secondary) but to make this easy, can you just tell me how to change my primary email address please. My professor needs to see all my info and it needs to go through my .edu email, not yahoo.

    You need to add a secondary address, confirm it by clicking the link in the email, and then make that one your primary address.

    I want to change my primary email address, which does not exist anymore. How to do since I cannot receive confirmation on the old one, which has been cancelled a couple of months ago?

    it's exactly what fcheslack says above:
    You need to add a secondary address, confirm it by clicking the link in the email, and then make that one your primary address.
    That doesn't require for you to receive any e-mail at your current primary e-mail.
