Exclude author name in in-text citation

Hi,

I often discuss authors' work in lit reviews and need to include only the year in the citation. For example, Smith (1973) demonstrated that...
So far, when ever I included the citation I had to manually delete the authors name and keep the year but when I update the citation the name reappears: Smith (Smith, 1973) demonstrated that...

Is it possible to have a better control whether I want to include year only or full citation? Also, how can I prevent the citation to update to the original form?

  • the word processor plugin has a "suppress author" button for exactly this scenario.
  • I'm using Word 2008 for Mac. Where is this button located?

    in the add/edit citation dialogue, under the "page" scrolldown menu, to the right of the suffix window - see the bottom image here:
