Openning PDFs

Not sure where to post this, so I'll post it here.

I have Firefox set to open PDFs in my PDF viewer, rather than show them in the browser. Before upgrading to Firefox 4 (and Zotero 2.1.1), opening a PDF from Zotero just opened the file seamlessly--it didn't open new tabs, didn't affect the webpage I was currently viewing, etc.

Now, however, if Zotero is in full window mode, it opens up a new (blank) tab in Firefox every time I try to open a PDF. If Zotero is in pane mode, it does not do this. This seems to be due to the fact that Zotero is now its "own tab" (and thus cannot act on the tab it is nested in).

Is there anyway to have Zotero (1) suppress opening the new tab [don't know if this is possible], (2) target the same tab every time [i.e., instead of target='_blank', target='zotero_document'], or (3) have an option in Zotero to open PDFs in either Firefox or a different application [thereby bypassing Firefox's behavior]?
