The Economist

I'm getting the "Could Not Save Item" error for http://www.economist.com/node/15557443, which is using the "The Economist" translator. I've disabled all add-ons except Zotero 2.1.1 and Save Session 1.3.1.6. I'm using Firefox 3.6.16 on Windows Vista, not using Aero theme but rather a modified "classic Windows" theme.

Does anybody else get this error on this page?
  • confirmed. If I remember correctly economist.com has been broken for a while, in any case, here's the relevant error:
    [JavaScript Error: "TypeError: doc.evaluate("//div[@class=\"clear\"][@id=\"pay-barrier\"]/div[@class=\"col-left\"]/div[@class=\"article\"]/font/b", doc, nsResolver, XPathResult.ANY_TYPE, null).iterateNext() is null" {file: "file:///home/sebastian/.mozilla/firefox/wkxw8okh.default/zotero/translators/The%20Economist.js" line: 0}]
  • Report ID: 1236450725
    Text of error as logged:
    [JavaScript Error: "TypeError: doc.evaluate("//div[@class=\"clear\"][@id=\"pay-barrier\"]/div[@class=\"col-left\"]/div[@class=\"article\"]/font/b", doc, nsResolver, XPathResult.ANY_TYPE, null).iterateNext() is null" {file: "file:///C:/Users/Ben/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/v1bgioa9.default/zotero/translators/The%20Economist.js" line: 0}]

    If it helps, this is the first Economist article I've viewed on this machine in a while.
  • Thanks adamsmith,
    Can we add the Economist translator to the list of known issues, if it belongs there?

    (I am referring to the list at http://www.zotero.org/support/known_translator_issues .)
  • I have a partially-working translator that you can use for now:
    Please go to http://github.com/ajlyon/zotero-bits/raw/master/The Economist.js and save the file to the translators directory of your Zotero data directory (http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data).

    It doesn't save author names, multiple results, or blog entries. So not ready for prime time, but feel free to use it if you urgently need something.
  • Thanks ajlyon,
    I'll do it manually for now, and thanks for working on a solution. If/when you break from working on it, please add an item to the list of known issues with a link back here, so that other users might be able to avoid confusion and a goose chase or two. I'd add it myself, but I don't have administrative permissions on this site at present (feel free to change that too, if you want :-).
    Thanks again!
  • Yes, it seems to not allow me to register because of the plus sign in my e-mail address. No error is reported, but it doesn't send e-mail with a password for initial login, and the resend password feature fails similarly. Zotero forums notifications work fine.
    Also, are you actively editing that translator?
  • No-- that's a half-fix that I had lying about already. I will get to this later, but not for at least several days.
  • Wiki updated as well.
  • Yes, it seems to not allow me to register because of the plus sign in my e-mail address.
    That wasn't the problem. You might have a password reset e-mail waiting for you now.
  • That wasn't the problem? I just default to that because it is on so many sites. Thanks Dan for clearing whatever the log-jam was; the e-mail arrived at about the time of your post.
  • (Agreed. That's a major annoyance of mine as well.)
