Safari Extension not working with Standalone Alpha

I'm running OSX 10.6.6 and Safari 5.03

I downloaded Standalone Alpha and was able to link to my libraries in Firefox no problem. I then installed the Zotero Connector for Safari but it is not working for me.

The Button appears in the menu bar but it is sometimes greyed out for many web pages although at other times it is not. When it is not greyed out and I click on it, the button blinks but nothing gets downloaded e.g., http://www.nafo.int/

Similarly, for pdf pages the button blinks but nothing gets downloaded e.g., http://daytonlab.ucsd.edu/Publications/Murrayetal99.pdf

If I use something like Google Scholar (e.g., http://scholar.google.ca/scholar?q=fisheries&hl=en&btnG=Search&as_sdt=1%2C5&as_sdtp=on) and click on the button a red box appears in the bottom right corner of the screen and I get another box that is titled Zotoro Item Selector that allows me to select various documents on the Google Scholar page.

There is also a problem with this though. The 'select all' and 'deselect all' buttons do NOT work. Also if 2 or more items are selected manually and OK is clicked, information on all of the selected articles does not download. Instead, the 1st article is downloaded 2 or more times depending on the total number selected.

Just wondering if anyone else has encountered these problems or if people can duplicate them with the url's provided.

Cheers!
  • It's greyed out for me as well.

A clarification: the button in Safari is equivalent to the address bar icon in Zotero for Firefox. It works only on sites with site translators (such as Google Scholar), not on any arbitrary web page or PDF. For arbitrary pages there'd have to be the equivalent of the Create New Item from the Current Page button in the Zotero toolbar, but no such functionality currently exists in the connectors.

If it's appearing as active on a page where Zotero for Firefox doesn't display an address bar icon, that's a bug.

This seems to mean that functionality of the Standalone alpha is pretty limited. It might be useful to let potential users know that right up front.
  • It's an alpha release. This is coming. No one is being told to use the current standalone as a full replacement for traditional Zotero, not yet.
  • it is greyed out for me as well, on pages like amazon, or library catalogues, where it previously worked before. i went into safari preferences to make sure it was activated and installed and it says it is. i am not sure what made it go from active to grey in the browser window.
  • sample URLs?
  • worldcat.
also, it is off and on for amazon.
  • please provide specific URLs that aren't working for you, we'll want to see if we can replicate this in any way.
  • The Zotero button in Safari is greyed out for me with the following URL:

There's no translator for that URL. (No icon appears in Firefox either.)

I'm going to close this. New issues should be reported in new threads.
