empty response from server -Report ID 1066222124

Support Services,

My report ID is 1066222124.

I've had trouble syncing for almost three weeks now.

My initial library that I synced was around 5000 items but now that I have cleaned it up my library is just under 2200 items and I still receive the empty response from server.

I know that there is an update coming for larger libraries. When is that going to be put into affect?

and is there anything else I can do to sync my library?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • In general, a library of 2200 items should be no problem at this point, assuming that you don't have an inordinately large number of authors or tags. Has your library synced at all? Your initial sync could be queued for several hours, but it should complete if you leave Firefox open.

Also, make sure that you are using the latest stable versions of Zotero and Firefox.
  • It synced when i first transferred my library from endnotes. The library was around 5000 items then, now its much smaller. However, at one point I had an issue that when I tried to sync my library duplicates would show up so I tried to restore the server from my local library. Ever since then I haven't been able to sync my library.

I do have a lot of tags. Is there anyway to mass delete them while keeping the ones I want?

Also, I heard that theres a way to export the tags into an en excel spreadsheet and delete them and then import the tags back into Zotero. Any information on that tactic?
  • And I have the latest version of both Zotero and Firefox.
  • Hello again,

I'm still having some trouble syncing. This is still the same problem that I have posted about numerous times.

I understand that the update is in progress. Any idea on when it would be available?

Thank you again for your time on this matter.
  • and by update, I mean a patch or something of the like to deal with the "empty response from server." Which i'm guessing is from the amount of automated tags i have.
  • We're planning some server changes over the next couple weeks, but you should never get an "Empty response from server message". If you are, something is wrong.

Provide a Debug ID for a sync attempt that produces that error.
  • So i've been trying to Debug but after about 2 hours of it "syncing" with the server, I haven't been able to get any kind of code. I also tried to view the code but it was over 1,000 pages long and I think my PDF maker crashed trying to download it.

    Any suggestions?

You have no active sync right now (assuming you're syncing from the same account you're posting with). Is the sync icon spinning?

I don't know what you mean by "any kind of code" or "view the code".

yes, the green arrow is spinning - it kept moving for about 3 hours. I stopped the sync a little after 3 pm. And I am using the account I am posting with. Not sure what to do. I tried to sync the debug with the server (as per instructions) but it failed saying it couldn't connect. maybe it needs to finish syncing first?

I think the 1000 pages that i was trying to view was just the log. Sorry I didn't mean to confuse you.
  • You have nothing queued and an empty library on the server with the account you're posting from.

If it's still spinning, restart Firefox.
  • If you look back on my previous comments, I posted saying that my library on the server was empty because I had to use the restore from local data option. Ever since then I have been having trouble and getting the "empty response from server" message.

I'm going to try again tomorrow. If the arrow continues to spin without results I will try restarting firefox. I'll post back here.

Today, after pressing the sync arrow, several minutes passed before a pop up message said “Empty response from server. Please try again in a few minutes” There is also a red circle with an exclamation mark next to the sync arrow. (This is the message that I have been receiving for almost the whole semester)

I also tried pressing the “Submit to Zotero Server” on the debugging screen and received the pop up “The server returned an error. Please try again.”
  • Are you syncing from the same computer/network you're posting from? I see no sign of recent sync activity from your current IP address. If not, go to http://whatismyipaddress.com/ from the computer you're syncing from and e-mail the IP address to support@zot....org with a link to this thread.
  • OK, never mind—I think I found your IP address, but I'm not seeing anything wrong on the server side, so I'll need debug output. You'll need to generate debug output for that error message and either provide a Debug ID or view the output, save it to a text file, zip it, and e-mail it to support@zot....org with a link to this thread.

    Dan,

I sent you the IP address from the computer I am syncing with. Please check it with the one you have.

Also, I'm generating the output and will send it to you.
  • Yes, I already had it.
  • I'm trying to get you the output but for some reason when i click "view output" all i get is a blank screen.

I've tried hitting "submit to server again" and it's been scrolling for about 20 minutes. Not sure if it's working though.
  • How many lines are logged? You need to clear debug output, reproduce the error as shortly after as possible (without doing anything else, preferably), and get us the debug output.

OK i have the debug output now and I put it in a compressed zip file. However, whenever I try to send it to you, I get a message back telling me that the file is too big for your domain.

This was the email I got back:

    Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned Error: message file too big (state 18).
  • Never mind. I think it just sent.
  • How large is the file? This was a zipped text file?
  • I just saw that the email did not send again.

11109K. And yes it was zipped.
  • A 10MB file should be delivered anywhere. Are you sure you sent the right file?
  • ok I had a fellow lab member send the file. You should have received it.
  • That output is truncated. Either you didn't copy the whole output or there's a clipboard size limit in effect. But you shouldn't have need to use the clipboard at all—you can save right from the debug output window to a file, like any web page.
  • OK, got your latest e-mail, which does contain the full output—thanks. Unfortunately, it shows what I suspected it might: an upload request to the server that's not showing up on the server, followed by the "Empty response" error. This likely means that the connection is being reset by something on the university network.

Are you connected via wifi? If so, try plugging into the wired network. If not, it could be an issue with the university proxy or something else on the network. If that's the case, you could try transferring your library via a flash drive to a computer off the network, syncing from there, and then pulling the data down from the server on this computer.

But since the Zotero client is showing the upload and the Zotero server isn't, something in between is almost certainly responsible for the interruption, and I'm afraid there's not really anything we can do about that.
  • (If this is a laptop, you might also try syncing from a different building on the off-chance that this is a localized problem.)
  • Thanks for working through this with me. Its not a laptop and I don't think its connected to wifi. I will try transferring the library. I won't be back in the lab until next week. I'll let you know how things go when I get back.

    Thanks for your help.
  • Dan,

Ok so I did as you suggested and was able to sync my library on a different network. I went into the lab yesterday to see if it would sync from the computer in the lab (the one with the IP address that you have, not the one I am posting with) and the arrow just kept spinning for about 3 hours.

Will I be able to sync from that computer, or from the lab? Or will I always have to sync on a different network?

    Thank you for you help!
  • In light of the current sync delays, you should try again after this weekend-- delays of several hours are happening not rarely, but the server infrastructure is changing this weekend, with the explicit goal of cutting those to something manageable (several minutes? several seconds?).
