Not Pulling in DOI #s for APA Citation Style

When importing new citations into Zotero, the program is not pulling in the DOI number for journal articles. As such, my biblios are not being correctly formatted. In addition, when I enter an "Accessed" Date into the info section, that is also not being pulled into my biblios. Is there anything that can be done with either of these issues to ensure that I will get correct APA formatting? Thanks
  • How are you importing citations? From a file? From websites? Not all site translators catch DOIs, but we may be able to add DOI capture for sites that you identify as needing such.
  • For the second question - APA doesn't require accessed dates (anymore):

  • But there is an APA 5th edition style in case your institution/publisher is still going by the old rules: http://www.zotero.org/styles/apa5th
  • Hi all...
Thanks. I am pulling in citations from EBSCO databases affiliated with my university's library. With regard to the access date, you are correct (old habits are hard to break), but now when the article does not have a DOI, one is required to include the URL of the journal. Is there any way to get zotero to include this?
Thanks again for all of the insights.
  • Zotero hides the URL when a page range is specified. To change this behavior, change the preference in the Styles pane of the Zotero preferences.
  • actually APA encourages you to find (and add) the DOI where it exists. (The CrossRef page will help you with that).
But EBSCO should really add the DOI automatically, maybe Avram can have a look.
  • Thanks for the note on the URL! Found and addressed that issue. And yes, DOIs are preferred and as such I sincerely appreciate your continued efforts in looking into this.
  • Well, the EBSCO translator looks for DOIs in the L3 field in RIS. Can you click "Export" and "Export to generic citation management software" for a record that has a DOI but the DOI isn't captured by Zotero, then paste the contents of that page here?

It is possible that EBSCO isn't being consistent about including the DOI in its RIS output-- it is possible to do some extra processing to get it from the page if it is displayed onscreen.
  • Many thanks again.
The following is what popped up when "exporting to generic citation..." was selected for an article that has a DOI that was not captured by Zotero:

  • The DO field being used by EBSCO is not part of the RIS specification (http://www.refman.com/support/risformat_intro.asp), but I've added support for it to the EBSCO translator (https://www.zotero.org/trac/changeset/7239), and it should work when Dan pushes it to clients or in the next release of Zotero.

Thanks for helping to pin this down.
  • my pleasure...thanks for addressing!
