Editing with 'Show Editor' causes numbering problems
I am using Zotero 2.0.3 with Word plugin 3.0.a3 in Word 2007. These are the latest Zotero versions.
I am using the "American Psychological Association 6th edition" style.
I am using 'Fields', not 'Bookmarks' for the citations.
Here is a picture of my Word document.
======= START =======
Cite PhD: Ó Cinnéide (2000) ---- this one was edited when it was added
Cite Other: (Ó Cinnéide, 2000b)
Cite PhD: (Ó Cinnéide, 2000a)
Bibliography:
Ó Cinnéide, M. (2000a). Automated Application of Design Patterns:
A Refactoring Approach (Thesis (PhD)). University of Dublin. Retrieved from http://csserver.ucd.ie/~meloc/thesis/thesis.pdf
Ó Cinnéide, M. (2000b). Automated refactoring to introduce design patterns. In Proceedings of the 22nd international conference on Software engineering (pp. 722-724). Limerick, Ireland: ACM. doi:10.1145/337180.337612
======= FINISH =======
Salient features:
1. Both entries in the bibliography are the same author, so the year is 'numbered' 2000a and 2000b.
2. The first citation has been edited in the 'Add Citation' dialogue, by clicking 'Show Editor...' and then removing the comma and moving the brackets around, so that it is "Author (Year)" instead of "(Author, Year)".
3. The alphabetical ordering of the titles is significant - the first citation must refer to the alphabetically LATER title.
The problems:
a) The first citation does not change to 2000a when the second citation is added.
b) When I click the Refresh Zotero button, the first citation is not corrected.
c) When I Edit Citation on the first citation, and select another entry, then back to the one that I want, it labels it 2000b instead of 2000a if I continue to move the brackets where I want them. However, if I actually type the 'a' at the end, this seems to workaround the problem, but it is not a viable solution for a large piece of writing where the year numbering could change after further edits to the document.
Conclusions:
i) An edited citation does not refresh properly.
ii) It seems that edited citations are very dangerous at the moment, as it is probably not just the year numbering that will not refresh (I haven't tested editing the author or the year in Zotero). I might be better off using 'Suppress Author' and typing the author's name - even though the citation would then be more difficult to proof-read later.

"Warning: If you edit..."
There are good reasons that the citation has to break when it's edited (short form: how could Zotero know which features you want to update and which ones you want to keep edited) - displaying a prominent warning is really all that I can think of that Zotero can do here.
There is a long, long discussion on how to deal with in-text citations such as "Smith (2007) says..." - no immediate solution is forthcoming, but if you're interested in the issues, search around on the forum for a bit.
I think I spotted one of those long discussions some months ago on the forum and thought I had found a workable solution with editing the citation. My preference would be that the csl should be enhanced (I guess csl enhancements might be painful ?) to allow for alternative citation formats which could then be selected in the 'Add/Edit Citation' dialog. But if this topic is already dealt with elsewhere, I will end this discussion/thread now.
