Style Request: Animal Behaviour

The journal, Animal Behaviour, requires some especially tricky sorting in their references section:

Cite references in the reference list in alphabetical, and then chronological, order according to the authors' surname and date. To help readers locate 'et al.' citations with the same first authors in the reference list, list references with three (or more) names after those with two, by date, as in the following sequence:

Marin & Silva 1992

Marin, Silva & Lopez 1986

Marin, Lopez & Silva 1989

Other than this, I have managed to stumble/bumble my way through creating a functional .csl for Animal Behaviour, but the above requirement leaves me stumped!
  • I don't think this is currently possible in Zotero.
This is a very complicated search string that would involve an "if" depending on the number of authors.
Afaik neither can Zotero sort by the number of authors, nor can you use "choose - if" on the sort command for the bibliography. Maybe Frank can weigh in if there is any chance this will be possible in the future.

There is a proposal on how to extend CSL to allow for this (http://bitbucket.org/fbennett/citeproc-js/src/tip/tests/std/humans/sort_AguStyle.txt), and support for this type of advanced sorting will be very likely to be included in Frank's rewritten CSL processor.
  • Are there any news about the Animal Behaviour Style? It would be very nice if anybody is able to build it.
    thanks
  • evaccaro apparently had this style done - except for the last bit of sorting - if he's willing to share/upload it somewhere I'd be happy to add it to the Zotero repository.
Otherwise you'll probably have to request it or write it yourself:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/requesting_styles
  • it seems that the only activity from evacarro in the forum was this discussion. I hope he will show up again and upload the style.
  • I have an Animal Behaviour style up and running. The sorting function (first post) as far as I know still isn't possible so users will have to manually re-order those types of references.

I'm working on submitting it to Trac now. I'll post again once it's available. Thanks for the reminder, cumuluss.

    PS--I am female.
  • any trouble with uploading through trac (which can be a bit confusing at first), just post it to gist.github.com and one of us will take care of putting it on the repository -
    sorry about gender confusion!
  • Uploading it was beasty, but it's up now. Thanks for the offer nonetheless, adam.

PS--User feedback on improving the style is always appreciated!
  • thanks evacarro for showing up again and uploading the style.
  • Hi,

I corrected some minor mistakes in the style (add collapse by year, change the delimiter-precede-last option and the demote-non-dropping-particle to never).

And I was wondering if the sorting function is now possible ?

    Thanks

I can't see how, but Rintze would know for sure.

    It should be:
    http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/4639/new-sort-scheme-for-bibliographies/?Focus=65634#Comment_65634
    http://citationstyles.org/downloads/upgrade-notes.html#sorting

I just noticed that the AGU CSL style doesn't actually use this more advanced sorting mechanism yet.

    Thanks it is working !

    I uploaded the style here : https://gist.github.com/1253781
  • done, thanks.
Btw. consider adding default locale's to journal styles.
