What's the difference between notes and annotations?

Can someone pl explain why you have both "notes" and "annotations" in Zotero, especially since both are created by highlighting text in pdf-files?
Also what exactly do they do differently when they are being inserted in a text processed document?
Thanks for any hints.
  • An annotation is tied to a specific section of text. It can just be a highlight, or it can contain text, though formatting on that text is limited.

A note is writing that is most commonly connected to a whole work (a child note) but can also stand alone (Standalone note). A note can include multiple annotations, complex formatting including tables, images, and formulas, citations to other works, etc.
  • Ah okay thanks. But it does have the same functions when it is inserted in text?
None of these two can have a heading though? Or am I mistaken?
  • If I insert a note attached to a Zotero entry into a document I miss the document reference. Is this as behaviour as expected or is there something wrong with my Zotero integration?
  • That's expected. The note can contain citations (e.g. via added annotations) that would reference the parent item.

You can add headings into notes, not annotations
  • Hm, OK.
I don't get what you need notes for, then.
Also I imported part of my Citavi library into Zotero but all annotations in Citavi seem to have become notes in Zotero.
It basically means that I can't enter them into a document unless I then enter the entry separately which renders the whole process rather clumsy. Or am I missing something?
