Zotero LibreOffice plugin installation fails on Mac M1 — Report ID 1110402342

Hello,

(Written with the assistance of an AI)

Report ID: 1110402342

I cannot install Zotero LibreOffice Integration on my MacBook Air M1 (2020), running macOS Sequoia.

My configuration:

Zotero updated from 9.0.6 to version 10

LibreOffice 26.2.6.3 (Apple Silicon / ARM64)

Eclipse Temurin JDK 21 (ARM64), correctly selected in LibreOffice settings

I previously tried LibreOffice 26.8.1 and Java 25 and Java 27, with the same problem.

I have also tried:

Automatic installation through Zotero preferences

Manual installation of the .oxt extension

Removing the faulty extension

Resetting the LibreOffice user profile

Completely reinstalling LibreOffice

Restarting my Mac

During manual installation, I received a MalformedVersionException error. The LibreOffice Extension Manager also reported that the extension status was unknown.

After updating Zotero, the automatic installation wizard now opens, but ends with "Installation Failed".

I also use Zotero with Microsoft Word and need to preserve that integration.

Could you please examine my error report and help identify the cause?

Thank you very much.

You should install JDK 27 from Oracle website, select it in LibreOffice, then close it and try manually installing the extension. If it doesn't work, take a screenshot of the error and upload it here.

@Bonniefd Correction, there is a bug in LibreOffice in parsing Java versions, and the new Oracle releases have triggered it (added an additional version number dot segment).

Your options are to wait for a LibreOffice update, or install a Java version that doesn't have 5-segment version number, such as those distributed by Temurin or Zulu. AFAIK these updated Oracle JDKs have fixes for the discovered security vulnerabilities of last week, so it may be more prudent to wait for LibreOffice to release an update.
  • Thank you.
    So wait and see.
  • i had the same issue, download java from adoptium, the problem got resolved in my case, the java plugins from oracle doesent work for macos
  • For information :
I have already installed Eclipse Temurin JDK 21 (ARM64) from Adoptium and selected it in LibreOffice 26.2.6.3.
The installation still failed with Zotero 10.0.6.

Since Temurin 21 is already installed and selected, would you recommend waiting for a LibreOffice update, or is there something else I should check?

Thank you again for your help.

Could you take a screenshot of LibreOffice → Settings → Advanced and post it here?

Does it still happen if you remove the other JDKs completely from your machine? Technically JDK 21 is no longer supported, and you could just as well run the Oracle version. Temurin 27 and 25 have both been updated to match Oracle's 5-segment version number too, so the only solution is to use a JDK that doesn't do that.

We've reported the bug to Document Foundation (makers of LibreOffice), but it doesn't seem like it got the attention of anyone who could fix it. It's likely also worth notifying Oracle about this, although ultimately this is neither a bug in Java, nor Zotero, so LibreOffice should be fixed. You can chime in on that bug report, it might draw more attention.
  • I removed Oracle JDK 25 and JDK 27 completely from the JavaVirtualMachines folder, leaving only Eclipse Temurin JDK 21 (ARM64).

I then manually reinstalled the Zotero LibreOffice extension. Zotero now appears in LibreOffice Writer, and I can successfully insert citations.

@adomasven, thank you very much for your help and patience!
