Options for "View Online": DOI or URL

I think it would be useful to be able to choose between DOI and URL for viewing a record on the web.
  • Why? The DOI will in almost all cases redirect to the canonical URL, so there's no difference, and if there is, the DOI — which Zotero uses first if available — should be up to date (though the URL would hopefully redirect as well). If you really want one or the other, you can click the button to the right of the field instead.

You're right and thank you for guiding me to the buttons on the right of each, which I hadn't paid enough attention to see them.

I've encountered several cases where the DOI heads to a URL different than the URL of the website from which I saved the record. Currently, it seems that the URL is prioritized over the DOI, even though the DOI is the canonical identifier. Maybe prioritization of DOI should have been my proposal, considering the current approach is better UX-wise.
  • Hmm, I guess I misremembered this. I thought we prioritized DOI over URL, but you're right — it's actually the other way around.

I think there are arguments for either way. The publisher page that the DOI would redirect to is really the canonical source, which is why many citation styles only want a DOI if one is available. On the other hand, it might be paywalled, and someone might have saved from somewhere else where, say, the PDF is openly available, so getting back there could be useful.

I'd be curious to hear what others think.
