Latex in Note Annotations
Hi,
i know how to use latex in Notes.
Is it possible to use latex in note annotations? I could not find any hint.
Background
I like to comment stuff right where it is in the pdf, such that when re-reading I see I have a comment for a specific location in the text.
Notes do not give me this (my fault?): I have a set of notes, but was not able to relate them to a certain position in the text. Therefore I use Note annotations.
Best

And is it me or are the notes not 'relatable' to some specific text position?
A work around I am using right now is to open pdf outside zotero in a paid software called PDF Annotator, which supports equations text box in latex (and a lot of other useful annotation tools).
https://github.com/qrkks/zotero-annotation-markdown
My use case: I read technical (CS/ML) papers and write structured notes directly in highlight comments — truth tables, short derivations, comparisons of definitions. These really need GFM tables, inline/display LaTeX, headings, lists, and bold/inline code. At the moment the annotation comment popup is plain text only; even hand-written tags are stored and shown literally. The standalone note editor does support tables and math blocks, but moving everything into one long item note loses the lightweight "tap a highlight → read the note in context" workflow, and a single note containing dozens of annotations quickly becomes hard to navigate.
Feasibility has already been demonstrated by the community: the third-party add-on "Zotero Annotation Markdown" (https://github.com/qrkks/zotero-annotation-markdown) renders Markdown and KaTeX in reader annotation comments and in the page annotation popups on Zotero 9/10, while keeping the stored comment as plain-text Markdown source — rendering only, with source-on-edit and a plain-text fallback. It shows both the demand and a low-risk UX pattern, with no data-model migration required.
Why native support matters: add-ons are desktop-only and cannot run on iOS/iPadOS, as the team has noted, so comments written with Markdown currently appear as raw source on an iPad. Native rendering — even of just the common subset (headings, emphasis, lists, GFM tables, inline code, inline/display math) in the reader popup and sidebar, consistently on desktop and mobile — would close this gap.
Thank you for all the great work on Zotero 10 — the new Reading Mode is wonderful. I'd be happy to provide more details or help test if that would be useful.
