Zotero release 11

Hi, I comaintain zotero on nixpkgs. Unfortunately the newest firefox update has broken zotero. as it still depends on firefox 140 which is EOL as of 29. September. Forcing zotero to use the old firefox version turns out to be quite complicate on nixos(https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/569006). I was thus wondering whether there is any timeline for the release of zotero 11 and the corresponding switch to firefox 153?

From this blog post (emphasize mine):

Instead of waiting months for a large update, we plan to release new versions of Zotero on a regular, rapid schedule, roughly every 6–10 weeks.

Zotero has been released on August 17th, 2026.

Legitimate question though probably better for zotero-dev

I assume you've seen dstillman's announcements about Firefox 153 based dev builds there as well as the various FF153 related commits?

Firefox 140 isn’t EOL until mid-October. 140.17esr came out on September 29th and is used in the latest beta.

There will be a 153–based Zotero 11 beta in a few days. It won’t be final before the 140 EOL, though.

Ultimately, if you want to distribute Zotero, you need a packaging solution that can include an arbitrary Firefox ESR. While we tend to update fairly quickly these days, most Firefox security bugs don’t impact Zotero, and we need to consider plugin compatibility and our own release schedule when determining when to do ESR updates. (I assume this problem is also what recently led Nix to break things for its users by shipping a version of Zotero that never existed.)

Thank you for the answers. I did see that 140 only came out 3 days ago but wasn't able to find an official EOL policy by mozilla?
I also did not know there had been problems before, very sorry about that. I will try and make sure we pin the specific esr version in nixpkgs, so we don't bother you again.
