"Child Item Must Be Note" Error

Dear folks,

This is about report-ID 1828860477. I think I inadvertently changed one or more notes into a different item type. Now, whenever I sync, I get an error message, "Child item must be note, attachment, or annotation."

I'm not sure how to fix this. I've eyeballed all the entries looking for anything that's not a note, but I don't see any (it's possible I'm just missing something). I tried exporting and reimporting all the records in which the problem might have occurred, but it's not fixed.

For the record, this happened when I was running some recent version of Zotero 9. This morning I upgraded to the new Zotero 10, hoping it might help, but no luck.

Any tips?
  • Can you provide a Debug ID (different from a Report ID) for a sync that produces this error?
  • Here's what I got:

    And here's the whole report:

  • Is there an easy way to find item L38PPCIZ, which seems to be causing all the trouble? I can delete and recreate it if I can just find it.
  • You should be able to find it by pasting L38PPCIZ into the quick search bar in "All Fields and Tags" mode.
Although there's something weird with that item, so not 100% sure that'll work.
  • First thing I tried. No luck.
  • Okay, so I exported everything I've modified in the last two days (when the problem started) as a Zotero RDF file. I then deleted those files and reimported them. That left me with one fewer item than before, but no sync error.

I'll hope I don't have cause to miss the one that disappeared.

If you're going to post here, please wait for us to help you instead of doing something we would never recommend that also wipes out any evidence of the problem.
  • But it looks like your Zotero was trying to upload a Newspaper Article item in the trash that was already a child item (note, attachment, or annotation) in the online library. That shouldn't be possible — Zotero itself doesn't allow such conversions — so this is likely due to some plugin or script (from Actions and Tags) that you used.
