How to remove preselected items?

When selecting a reference into a footnote in Word, Zotero leaves open as preselected items the titles that are selected in the main library of Zotero, or titles that were chosen earlier. These preselected but unwanted items cannot be de-selected, therefore it becomes very time consuming, as I have to close the main program, open it and be careful that the mouse-cursor is outside any item. The other work-around is to check the footnote carefully and remove the unwanted part of the generated footnote, but this will probably lead Zotero to restore the original when refreshing, resulting in wrong references in my footnotes.
Is there a better solution for this annoying phenomenon?

This seems like a misunderstanding. Open Documents and Selected Items are shown at the top of the citation dialog, and can be selected by pressing Enter, but there's absolutely nothing requiring you to choose them. If they're not what you're trying to cite, type another search and/or press down-arrow to move into the list/library view to select something else.

If you're having trouble beyond that, provide some screenshots and provide exact steps to reproduce the problem.
