issue with saving PDFs through my institution's library

[Split from Zotero Connector 5.0.212 fails to save PDFs from multiple sources]

I will note that I am having this same issue with saving PDFs through my institution's library. The issue exists on my work laptop browsers and desktop Zotero (Windows and Firefox and Chrome). It does not exist on my personal laptop (Mac and Firefox), however. And I am using my institution's library as the access point in both cases. I will be teaching a workshop about Zotero in about a week and want to sing its praises, but this will be hard to do if I have to manually download and then drag and drop every PDF.

(Please start new threads for new issues. I've moved this to a new thread.)

If you'd like our help, we'll need example URLs and Debug IDs from the Zotero Connector for reloading and trying to save.
  • Thanks. It's now even happening with HTML snapshots. The first example is from a website, where it failed to download the HTML. The second is a journal article webpage with a PDF (though it includes my institution's proxy). I instructed students today, and it worked fine for them but not for me. The students had just installed Zotero, and I'm wondering if I should uninstall and reinstall it. Many thanks.

You're running a version of Zotero from October 2024. You should install the latest version from the download page and figure out why you haven't received automatic updates in almost two years.
  • Thank you. I just updated it. In the past, my institution would roll these updates out institution-wide, but it's possible it is now up to the individual to do it on their own computer. In any case, that worked. Thank you.

Zotero updates automatically. You only wouldn't have the latest version if you or your institution disabled automatic updates, or if your institution was somehow blocking update checks.

You should go to the Config Editor in the Advanced pane of the Zotero settings and make sure app.update.auto is set to true.
  • My institution has turned that setting off, and it is locked, so I can't change it. They're very strict about software security, which is why in the past, they rolled out Zotero updates everywhere all at once. It used to be an administrator had to install every piece of elective software. Now (as of about a year ago), there is a way to install approved software on one's computer by oneself, but there was no notification that there was an updated version of Zotero available and that one had to download it oneself.

OK. We're planning to add a warning banner that will show when you're on an outdated Zotero version, for cases where that pref ends up off (intentionally or otherwise).
  • That's great. Thanks!
  • (inside baseball -- hi Winn!: Syracuse does have 9.0.7 available through the "Company Portal". It used to be possible to install it without admin, but they have locked that down. I'm going to keep bugging them about a better solution; it's quite annoying to always lag behind)
  • Yeah, I installed 9.0.7 via Company Portal 45 minutes ago. I just didn't know there was an update and that it was available.

    (9.0.7 doesn't exist, so hopefully that's 9.0.6.)
  • What you said.
