Available for beta testing: Improved Zotero Connector for Safari

The latest Zotero beta for macOS includes an updated Zotero Connector for Safari that addresses a number of the previous limitations in Safari:
  • Proxy support — automatically detecting proxy logins and redirecting previously accessed sites through the proxy (e.g., redirecting jstor.org to jstor-org.proxy.univ.edu) so you can download gated resources such as PDFs
  • One-click installation of citation styles from the Zotero styles page, GitHub, or Gitee, with no download step
  • Improved saving of gated PDFs on some sites
  • Proper detection of single-page sites (e.g., YouTube), so the save button updates without a full page reload (requires Safari 26.2+ for some sites)
When you first run the updated extension, Safari will show a permissions prompt for connecting to 127.0.0.1. Be sure to allow access, or the Connector won't be able to save to the Zotero app. In an upcoming beta, we'll add a clearer error message when this access is denied.

The new Connector requires Safari 18 or later on macOS 13 (Ventura). macOS 11 and 12 will continue to use the previous Connector, which won't be receiving further updates.

    So this effectively brings the Safari extension up to par with the feature set of the remaining browser extensions - nothing unique is added?

    @ryanwwest: It certainly doesn't add anything unique. It doesn't even fully bring it to parity — most notably, we still can't intercept RIS/BibTeX/CSL on arbitrary sites due to Safari limitations. But it brings the Safari extension much closer to the other extensions than before.
