Zotero word processor not working properly (messed-up assigned citation numbers and bibliography)

Hello,

I am new to Zotero and installed the latest version (9.0.6) on macOS. The main problem is that numbering is not working properly. When I choose citations that I already cited in my Word document, it assigns new numbers/citations to the same citation. It does not automatically assign the previous number/citation to it. The second problem is that, despite trying many times with the bibliography, it does not create a clean listing where I want it. It has so far appeared randomly within my text or as a footnote.

I have watched many tutorials to make sure I am not doing anything wrong, and even redownload/reinstalled the app, but none of them helped.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
And thank you for your attention to this matter!
  • Which citation style are you using?

Note that the bibliography inserts at the current cursor position -- make sure the cursor is where you want it. If that's not it, there may be a hidden leftover from a previous failed attempt
  • I’ve tried IEEE, Nature, and numbered Vancouver, and the same numbering problem occurs with all three styles.

The point about hidden leftovers makes sense though. Thank you!
  • If it's generating new numbers even though you have already cited that sime item, supposedly, you might have flattened your citations actually. (the older ones)
See the following guide on how to check that: https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/existing_citations_not_detected
