Incorrect 2009a/2009b suffixes for a single reference, followed by document corruption (Report ID: 1

Hello,

I have a Microsoft Word file

My original problem was not the update error. The original problem is that Zotero incorrectly assigns letter suffixes (a, b, c) to a reference that exists only once in my library.
  • (specifically the deleted/duplicate items sections there -- the original problem described is different, but the likely cause the same since they are both about disambiguation)
  • Thank you.

I have already checked Duplicate Items, and there is only one item remaining in my Zotero library.

However, in the Word document, the citation editor sometimes shows two identical citation chips even though only one item exists in the library.

I also receive "The Zotero field code corresponding to this citation has been corrupted" for some citations, and eventually the document stopped updating altogether.

A new Word document works correctly.

Could the old document still contain orphaned references to a deleted item? If so, is there a way to remove those orphaned citation references from the document without recreating all?

The linked page explains how to troubleshoot this (e.g., using Word field codes).

For general corruption in the document, see Troubleshooting Errors in Word Processor Documents.
