Firefox connector not saving to zotero.org

edited today at 12:17pm
Feature "save to zotero.org" without Zotero program running does not work for main browser. Will work on private browser, correctly prompts for credentials, but seems to be hung for main instance of firefox.

May have been triggered by clicking "clear credentials" in addon prefs when debugging something else.

Have tried: logged out and back in, refreshed every page relevant, disabled and re-enabled addon, cleared cookies, revoked private keys from account for firefox connector. Searched forums but no similar issues found. Can you suggest anything else to try? Up-to-date addon. Debug from addon: See D743449121

  • Disabled all extensions, re-enabled Connector. Still fails to add and does not prompt for new credentials despite having no current private key.
  • We'd need to see a Debug ID that shows reloading the page and trying to save with all extensions disabled.
  • That doesn't show you reloading the page before trying to save.
  • Actually, looks like direct PDF saving (not on a webpage) to zotero.org was broken in Firefox. We'll have a fix out shortly.
  • That's great you found something, but seems to not be the root of my problem.

The issue isn't just PDF for me. Even save as webpage with snapshot will resolve to a red X and say Zotero is not connected.

I'm still not getting asked for new credentials. There is no private key for connector in my account, but the extension still says it will save to zotero.org. Again, if I boot a private instance of firefox, it will ping me for creds and add a new private key. But that key doesn't cross over to the main firefox instance, for obvious reasons, so I'm still not able to save without running zotero desktop in the background.

Interesting, I just toggled off Automatically download PDFs and now I can save snapshots to zotero. Actually got pinged for credentials this time.
(Does not work if the page is already classified as PDF)
  • Could you provide a Debug ID for an attempt to save on a normal page (e.g. this forum thread page)?

Here you go. I do have my other extensions back on, but pretty sure that isn't the issue. D1810192849
  • This shows the item is saving successfully. Why do you think it's failing? Is it possible, that the connector is authorized for a different account?
  • See posts above for more detailed context.

When troubleshooting another issue, I revoked credentials. That may have been the trigger that prevents Save to Zotero.org.

Now, I have also erased private key while trying to fix this before initially posted to forum. Connector was not asking for new creds. Still failing to save anything.

In the timeline of this thread, I was able to get Connector to finally ping me for updated credentials by:
toggling off "Automatically download associated", and,
trying to save a non-pdf URL to zotero.

So now, at least my credentials are indeed connected. Again. And I only have one zotero account, so hopefully your hypothetical would be impossible. I'm the only one who's ever used zotero on this machine.

However, the issue of not being able to save to zotero.org still exists if any item is a pdf, or if I have toggled on Automatically download associated.
  • Direct PDF saving to zotero.org is fixed in the Connector beta.

Switched to Connector beta. Repeated steps, was able to save the LHS-1 page, PDF. Good.

However, parent item not created. Is this expected behavior with Save to zotero.org ?
(Had Logging running, here is relevant output: D1309349814)
  • Yes. Retrieve Metadata is a recent addition in the web library and doesn't yet run automatically for Connector saves. As when saving to the app, you should still always save from an article page if possible.

Understood. Hard to do for SDS / material spec sheets which aren't articles, but I'll make do.

PS - Thanks for the prompt fix.
