Zotero 7 + Word 2016: Cannot insert citations into any document (Report ID 979633231)

Hello,

I need help with a Zotero Word integration problem.

My setup:

Windows 11
Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016 (32-bit)
Zotero 7 (latest version)
Report ID: 979633231

Problem:

I cannot insert citations into any Microsoft Word document, including a completely new blank document.

Steps to reproduce:

Open a new blank Word document.
Type any text.
Place the cursor after the text.
Click Add/Edit Citation.
The Zotero citation dialog opens normally.
I select any reference from my library and confirm.

Instead of inserting a citation, Word displays {Citation}, and Zotero immediately shows:

"Zotero experienced an error updating your document."

Sometimes, after clicking Add/Edit Citation, I also receive:

"You must place the cursor inside a Zotero citation to edit it."

even though I am working in a completely new blank document with no existing citations.

Things I have already tried:

Updated Zotero to the latest version.
Restarted Windows.
Reinstalled the Microsoft Word add-in.
Tested with completely new blank Word documents.
Tested with different references.
Document Preferences opens normally.
Zotero.dotm is loaded in Word.
Word Trust Center settings checked.
Macro settings checked.
Protected View checked.

The problem occurs with every citation and every new document.

Could you please help me determine what is causing this?

Thank you very much.
  • Dear Zotero Team,
I know that it is unusual for you to provide any support for older version of Zotero. But maybe I can ask for an exception: For confidentiality reasons I have to use a self-hosted zotero server, which I established about 2 years ago, and we are still using Windows Client Version 6 (old, i know...).
Is there any chance that you can provide assistance to fix the issues introduced by that large June Windows Security update in Windows Client Version 6? Maybe it requires only some edits in some config file or else, which I would be happy to do myself (instead of the Zotero Team providing a full patch or update...)?
I would love to switch to Zotero 9, but have so far not been able to establish a self-hoster server (in progress...).
    Many thanks!
  • I don't think there's any way Zotero will backport versions of a fix to a 2+years old version, I'm afraid.
Best I can see, the fixes are all in the Word Integration (https://github.com/zotero/zotero-word-for-windows-integration ) but I don't think the current, updated integration will work with Zotero 6 -- you can look at the changes, made around the June 12 issue, though, so you might be able to see what's going on there.
  • Thank you for your reply.

I have already upgraded to the latest version of Zotero. I am currently using Zotero 9.0.6 (64-bit).

    The problem still occurs.

Microsoft Word is Office Professional Plus 2016 (32-bit) on Windows 11.

Even in a completely new blank document, clicking Add/Edit Citation inserts {Citation} and then shows "Zotero experienced an error updating your document."

I have also tested different references and new blank documents, but the result is always the same.

Could you please advise what I should check next or whether this could be related to Word 2016?
  • We'd have to see a Report ID from the current version of Zotero.
  • Thank you.

Here is the Report ID from the current version of Zotero 9.0.6 (64-bit):

    Thank you.

There's no word processor integration error there.
  • Thank you.

The error occurs every time I open Microsoft Word and click Add/Edit Citation.

I tested it in a completely new blank document.

Zotero inserts {Citation}, and immediately after that I get the message:

"Zotero experienced an error updating your document."

Should I reproduce the error again and then immediately submit a new Report ID?

The problem occurs in every Word document, including completely new blank documents.
  • dstillman Zotero Team
Yes, we'd have to see a Report ID after actually reproducing the problem, before a Zotero restart.
  • Thank you.

I reproduced the problem exactly as requested, without restarting Zotero, and immediately submitted a new error report.
