Word document still generates 2020a/2020b after deleting a duplicate Zotero item

Hello,
I encountered a problem after accidentally deleting (instead of merging) a duplicate item in my Zotero library.
Here is what happened:
I had two identical records for the same article:
Helms ER, Kwan K, Sousa CA, Cronin JB, Storey AG, Zourdos MC.
Methods for Regulating and Monitoring Resistance Training.
Journal of Human Kinetics. 2020;74:23–42.
DOI: 10.2478/hukin-2020-0011
I cited both duplicates at different moments in the same Word document.
Later I deleted one duplicate instead of using Merge Items.
My Zotero library now contains only one record (confirmed by DOI search and library search).
However, my Word document still generates:
Helms et al., 2020a
Helms et al., 2020b
Even after removing the citations and reinserting the single remaining item, Zotero sometimes inserts multiple versions (e.g., 2020a, 2020b, 2020b).
The bibliography also generates two identical references differing only by the letters "a" and "b".
Is there a way to repair the citation metadata in the existing Word document without recreating the entire document?
Thank you very much.
