Does Zotero use AI

I used Zotero to generate citations for a paper that I intend to submit for publication. Can Zotero please confirm that it does not use AI to generate citations? I didn't use any AI technologies in conjunction with Zotero. Thanks!!!
  • Nothing that can reasonably be called AI (and definitely no genAI/Large Language Models) are used anywhere in Zotero as of today (June 2026) unless you use plugins that explicitly do.

I think it's safe to say that citation generation, in particular, will never use AI in Zotero.
  • I'm glad to hear this, in part because of my forum post requesting a (generative) AI-free version of Zotero always be available:

The OP seems to be in a position that I think will be common: Needing to be certain that no software used included generative AI. I hope Zotero is always certifiably 'clean', or a 'clean' version is always available.

But also FWIW: I just went through publication of an article, and it's clear that the reference list was mangled by AI _after_ our submission. The version of the article we were asked to review as 'proofs' (the very last stage) had changed many of the references in the reference list. It looked like the layout and copy-edit team had used AI. We had to change them back.
