Highlighting duplicates

Is there any that Zotero can highlight duplicates outside of the "duplicate items" folder? Perhaps with some sort of marker or symbol. And even better would be if the duplicate could be easily merged on the spot.

I think this would save time and reduce redundancies of reading and taking notes on an article only to realise halfway through that you've already done it for the duplicate.
  • The Zoplicate plugin might be useful for you.
  • I just downloaded it and tried it. It has some great features, like bulk merging :)

But I was more thinking, some kind of indicator next to a file that tells me it's a duplicate, maybe an icon next to it in the main menu or a colour highlight. That way I'll know to check whether I have already made notes or markings on the duplicate before I go through and do the same to the file, wasting quite a bit of time.
  • You can use an emoji tag for this: https://www.zotero.org/support/collections_and_tags#emoji_tags
Create the emoji tag with the emoji you like, go to the Duplicate Items collection, select all items, drag them to the emoji tag you have created. All the current duplicates will show the emoji in the items list.
  • That's creative, but it wouldn't be automatic for new downloads. It's better than nothing though, so thanks for the suggestion. Now just to decide which emoji to use... ;)

This script via the Actions and Tags plugin can help you automatically tag duplicates.
  • Thanks for the emoji tip. But that would scatter the emojis throughout the library, wouldn't it? How would you match them up to systematically merge the duplicates? Use search for the author?

So many steps. This doesn't expedite systematic merging of the duplicates.
  • I recommend using the plugins 'Zoplicate' and 'Linter for Zotero' for checking duplicates. These tools either alert you or help you directly manage duplicate entries. However, I prefer adding a 'duplicate' tag and leaving the duplicates for later review, as I've implemented in the action above.
As mentioned in the discussion comment, systematically merging duplicates is outside the scope of the emoji tip script.
  • Apologies, I did not think to look on Github for a continuation of this topic.

Since removing duplicates is quite laborious, I can well understand why someone would simply tag them "duplicate" to deal with them later.
