Formatting issue citation same author same year

Hi,

I have several citations by the same first author, same year, but Zotero does not automatically add a leter after the year to differentiate between references. However, what it does is add the second author. I have tried with several styles, such as APA 7th, Chicago, Harvard, or Nature, and none seem to add a letter to the year.

Looking at other discussions in the forum I have tried restarting both zotero and word and making sure that the correct formatting style is selected in document preferences, but to no avail. Moreover, I have manually edited the author list on the zotero entries to ensure it detects it as the same author name but still it adds a second author instead of a letter after the year.

Please help, I do not know what else to try.

Thanks in advance,
Nuria
  • Adding second authors (assuming they are different) before et al. is correct behavior to disambiguate publications with the same first author for APA and Chicago style.

Nature is a numeric style (i.e. just puts numbers in the text), so not sure what you tried there.
There are many variants of Harvard and they behave differently to disambiguate, so that'd depend on which one you used.
  • I tried with the styles available on zotero to see which one would do the distinction with the letters, thank you for your clarifications. From other messages on this forum I had the impression that APA 7th edition should add letters, please see image attached as an example.

My question remains, what would be the style then to add a letter after the year instead of a second author or the first name as some other styles do?
