trying to upload a citation, near the end, if fails and crashed word

Cite an item using Add/Edit Citation, you mean? (You can't cite attachments.)
What exact version of Word? How big is the document? Was this a one-time thing, or can you reproduce this?
Generally a Word crash would be a Word bug.
