How to remove a PDF from a reference

I suspect that this should be obvious to me, but how do I remove a PDF from a reference?

    I might not understand the question correctly, but expand the item in the middle panel, right click on the PDF --> Move item to trash

    If I click on Move item to trash, the entire reference is deleted. I just want to remove the PDF attached to the reference, not the entire reference.

    Be aware that if you move a *reference* to the trash it gets removed from all collections. To remove a reference from only a single collection (leaving its presence in other collections intact) then use "Remove Item from Collection…".

    Thanks for this reminder. I have the same reference at the top level of a group and in a collection within the group. I'd like to remove it only from the top level. (I own the group.) As far as I can tell, "Remove from Collection" is not available for this particular maneuver.

    You can't remove a reference from the top level of any library. All items are always visible in "My Library"
