Different Zotero references are displayed with the same citation number in Word, and citation field

Hello,

I am using Zotero with Microsoft Word to manage citations in a Chinese manuscript. I am using a numeric citation style.

I have encountered several unusual problems in the current Word document:

Different references are displayed with the same citation number.
For example, I inserted two different references, one by Le Berre et al., 2023 and another by Wangchuk et al., 2024. However, both citations are displayed as [1] in the text, even though they are different items in my Zotero library.
Citation formatting is inconsistent.
Some citation numbers appear in blue or purple, while others appear in black. This happens even within the same document.
The text after a citation sometimes becomes blue and underlined.
In some places, after inserting a citation such as [4], the following normal text also becomes blue and underlined, as if it has been included in a hyperlink or citation field.
Citations near equations show different formatting.
Some citations inserted after equations appear with a different font color or style compared with citations in the main text.

I am not sure whether this is a Zotero issue, a Word field corruption issue, or a problem caused by copying/pasting citations within the document.

Could you please advise:

How can I check whether the Zotero citation fields in this Word document are corrupted?
Is it safe to delete the problematic citations and reinsert them using “Add/Edit Citation”?
Is there a recommended way to repair citation fields without using “Unlink Citations”?
Why would two different Zotero items be displayed with the same citation number?

Thank you very much for your help.
  • You should isolate this issue to some small section of the document, like a couple of pages, then run Zotero refresh, and investigate any inconsistencies with the citations. If their numbers don't update, you should place the cursor in them and press Add/Edit Citation. They may have been modified, in which case you will get a prompt about that, and you can resolve it there, which will also explain the reason for why they are not updating properly. If a citation dialog appears, but the cited item is not listed, then it means they may have become unlinked through some means.
