Zotero data location, syncing issues?

My Zotero database is installed in the default location:
C:\Users\\Zotero

I am using Zotero syncing, with unlimited space.

My database currently has about 13K documents, many of which are pdfs from old conferences and journals I collected since I started my career a "few" years ago.
I have been manually updating the metadata for these papers...

Lately, I find that the updates don't always "take".
I will correct the author, watch it change back to what it was, and then have to change it again. Obviously some records changed back without me noticing it, so I marked some files as #checked with errors.

I tried it without any plugins to eliminate any of them, but it still happened.

I am using Windows 11.
I think the user home directory may actually be a sym link to the cloud directory (I may be wrong). Could this explain the issues? I'm the only one using the account.

If so, what is the best way to fix it without breaking my data or plugins?
  • If you actually symlink the data folder into a cloud sync (like Dropbox, G drive, etc) that would almost certainly be the problem

I also sometimes see fields I am editing in the right pane revert to their previous value as I am entering the new value, or soon after. It seems to correlate with Zotero syncing the data to online, ie the update wheel in the top right is spinning (although if the new value is being uploaded, why the value would revert does not really make sense). I do not have my data folder symlinked (it's on my local SSD). It's just one of those things I have learned to live with.
  • I did not manually simlink anything - but I was wondering if Windows does this as part of the "Onedrive"backup?

I also initially lived with the reverting values, but it is getting worse (maybe because my library is getting bigger)?
