Rename File to Match Parent Item

When I click "Rename File to Match Parent Item" in the Item pane, it correctly renames the PDFs in my Finder (Apple), but inside Zotero, the PDF's name field turns blank.

What am I doing wrong here, or is this a bug?

  • 1) You only need to click that manually if you've disabled file renaming (or it's a linked file and you haven't enabled renaming of linked files).

    2) What do you mean by "blank"? The attachment title should normally become "PDF", but that's expected.

    Hi dstillman,

I did not enable automatic renaming for linked files. I could do that, though, because I like the full document name to match the parent item, and automatic renaming ensures that I don't need to click "Rename File to Match Parent Item".

I noticed that if I correct an error and then select "Rename File to Match Parent Item", the PDF gets renamed to "PDF", which I don't like (I want to see its full filename).

My current workaround is to just delete that PDF and then to insert it again (this gives me the full filename).

Thank you for explaining that "PDF" is the expected behavior. For some reason, I just prefer the full filename.

If there is a way to keep the full filename after doing "Rename File to Match Parent Item", please let me know :-)

EDIT: figured it out: General --> tick "Show attachment filenames in the items list"

    thanks!!

PS. I wanted to add a picture, but this site shows a "There was an error processing your image" error in both Safari and Chrome (both for png and jpeg files).
