Preventing duplicate note citations on the same page for the same source

Hi,

I'm using the visual CSL editor to develop a custom citation style that uses footnotes for citation. I'm trying to work out if there is some way for a citation to see that there is a preceding citation for the same source on the same page and instead of writing a new footnote to instead cross-reference the first citation?

For example, in this document the first, fifth and sixth citations are for the same source. Would it be possible for the in-text section to read "...groovy1. Oh, and terrific.1"?

  • Not possible for two reasons:
    1. CSL isn't page-aware -- you can check if a note is immediately next to another one or even a specific number of notes away, but not if it's on the same page
    2. Footnotes in general, and in Word/LO/GDoc specifically, don't allow recurring numbers: they're always ascending from one to the next
