Adding citations in Google Docs no longer works

Report ID: 1183139958

I installed the latest update for Zotero; I’m now on version 9.0.3. I followed the troubleshooting instructions for using Google Docs. The problem persists: I still can’t add footnotes to my Google Docs document. I also uninstalled and then reinstalled the Chrome connector, but that didn’t help either. Copying the document doesn’t help either, and it doesn’t matter where I try to add a footnote.
Thank you in advance.

  • What exactly happens when you try? Nothing, an error message, a dialog that doesn't do anything?

If it works in a new, empty document, you'll need to follow the troubleshooting instructions through to the end, which will by definition isolate the problem.
  • If I want to add a footnote, I get the error message that there is a problem and whether I want to see the instructions for fixing the problem. Zotero does put a new footnote, but the footnote says "updating". However, this status does not change.
  • I'm having the same issue just since yesterday evening in google docs.
I have tried all the steps you have -- uninstalling and redownloading Zotero and its extension, turning off all other extensions, restarting all applications, restarting my computer, trying to do it in Safari and Firefox, opening a new document, etc.

It does the same thing where it lets me select the citations I want to use, but then says "Zotero experienced an error updating your document. Would you like to view troubleshooting instructions? Yes No" and then puts {updating} where the citation I am trying to put in should go.

I wonder if more people are having this issue and there is a larger problem/bug?

Same answer. Try in a new document, and if that works, see the troubleshooting steps linked from the dialog and above, which, again, will by definition isolate the problem.
  • I tried in a new empty document but it did not work and gave the same error messages. I also tried to isolate the 'problem citation' as it describes but that did not work either. I unfortunately tried all the options on the trouble shooting document without luck.

@adanderson: Unless you can completely empty the document contents and still get the error, you haven't followed the steps. That's why we say it will by definition isolate the problem.

You can also share an excerpt of the document with us, as explained there.

@Katharina20012810, @adlekki, @adanderson: Please try updating to Zotero Connector 5.0.205 and reloading Google Docs.
