Zotero 9 is now available. You can read the full announcement for more details.

If you're running Zotero already, you can update now via Help → "Check for Updates…". Otherwise, you can install Zotero from the download page. We'll be offering Zotero 9 as an auto-update to existing users in a few days.

(Please start new threads for any issues.)
  • Thankyou so much to everyone who worked on the TTS! I've been juggling multiple TTS solutions for years now, and I can finally simplify this all into Zotero like I've always dreamed!
  • I've been paying around with this and i have to say fantastic job everyone. These are great additions to an already great tool.

    Thank you.
  • Super nice! Looking forward to explore the new features
  • Ah, wonderful new, and great job!
  • Thanks for the update, and after reading the full details, still not being able to add a periodical and its contents to Zotero, apparently an old issue. This function appears to have been planned for the 5.0 version... and this functionality is nowhere in sight.
  • I'm so thankful for the automatic installation of JRE and Zotero Tools in Libre Office! Thanks so much guys! You made my day ;)
  • Just want to thank everyone for Zotero and this new update!
  • I just updated and the banner at the top says "You've been upgraded to Zotero {$version}!"

    Oops! :)

Just tried the Read Aloud feature -- oh my, it seems *perfect*! I was recently looking into text-to-speech apps for reading PDFs. My aim is to replace some of my podcast listening with listening to research papers. But of course where are all those PDFs stored for me? In Zotero -- so having a really nice text-to-speech feature in Zotero is amazing. Bonus points if there's some super slick, amazing way to annotate or add notes while listening on mobile!

@dsquared: As far as we know that's caused by some interaction with a plugin (e.g., a plugin having incomplete localizations), but enough people see it that we've added an extra manual replacement for the next version to make sure it doesn't happen.

The Read Aloud feature with premium voice is very impressive.... Although other languages a little less impressive (but still fairly ok. German, Dutch). Of course PDF's remain annoying as the voice still reads the footnotes, headers, etc, but I suppose that cannot be helped. Love the 'recent' folder as well. Thanks!
  • Impressive, amazing, having read aloud on phone would be the cherry on top, i would be so so so so so happy to listen to papers on walks !!! That would honestly change my life
  • Hi
The read-aloud feature is an amazing addition!
In a future version perhaps we can have an option to switch off reading references, links, etc?
  • One step closer to listenning to my academic readings in the car/public transit.
Awesome work, I love it !
  • Read-aloud is amazing, thank you! I've wanted this feature for ages and have never found a good solution. Excited to be able to use it on my phone in the future too.
  • This is a super cool update, thanks a lot!
  • I've been using Zotero for near 15 years and I'm so happy it keeps getting better and better. Incredible!
  • I realize you're a nonprofit organization providing an open-source product at little to no cost for most users, but I really didn't appreciate having my Zotero 7 installation suddenly become Zotero 9. I've searched through and couldn't seem to find the setting that allowed you to force this update on me right in the middle of my finals. It turns out that's in the Config Editor where you splash a big "Proceed with Caution" window rather than a simple toggle in the Settings so users have more control before the fact rather than after.

As a paying customer who generally enjoys Zotero and tells everyone I can about it, please don't do this again. Expose the auto-update as a toggle in Zotero Settings and for the love of God, don't push a major update right near the end of an academic semester. I'm sure there are ample windows in the general academic calendars of higher education institutions worldwide for you to push these updates so users have time to acclimate to changes in the UI and functionality. Find them and use them. Embargo updates for these periods and enjoy a well-deserved holiday so we can get our work done without additional friction from our beloved research management tools.

I was going to make the upgrade but when I wanted to, not when you thought it was best. Please be more respectful of your users in the future.
  • Thank you so much for adding TTS on desktop!
Can this feature be available on mobile?
I am often travelling and rely on PDFs readers like Adobe Acrobat for TTS.
