Trying to install ACS style author-date

Hi!

I'm currently trying to install a ACS citation style that uses the author-date format. The current ACS version (2022 revision) available in the Zotero Style Repository, only uses as citations/in reference lists. As found in several articles, the ACS style, however, also allows author-date.

After searching in previous forums and finding the correct style on GitHub (https://github.com/DataKritter/zotero-citation-styles/blob/master/american-chemical-society-author-date.csl), Zotero doesn't seem to allow me to install that .csl file. When I drag and drop, open from Finder, or use the "add from file" feature, nothing happens. I've downloaded the raw file.

Can anyone help? Thank you in advance!

  • That style installs just fine -- if you click on the "Raw" link with a browser in which the Zotero connector is installed and with Zotero open, it will prompt you to install it. (ACS asked us to remove all ACS styles except the standard one since they encourage authors to use that for all journal submissions)
  • Hi Adam

Clicking on the "Raw" link does not prompt me to install it. I'm using the Zotero Connector with Zotero open on Safari.

When trying on Google Chrome, I do get the prompt. When clicking "ok", I get a notification from Zotero saying "Installing file". After that, however, nothing further happens and I cannot see the style in my Zotero settings.

Thank you for your quick response!
  • Right click on "Raw" and use "Save as..." to download the .csl file which you'll be able to install then.
  • I hate to say it, but that doesn't seem to work, either. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. Every single way I tried to upload the file to Zotero, it doesn't appear in the style editor. I've tried everything on both Chrome and Safari. What am I missing?
  • Make a new text document (not Word, just a simple text editor) and call it "american-chemical-society-author-date.csl"

Then go to that link up top, click on raw. Copy the whole code.
Paste it into your newly created .csl file. Tada. Install via double click or via the menu.

Otherwise you'd need to tell us what "doesn't seem to work" mean. Ain't got no magic crystal ball here ;)
  • With "doesn't seem to work", I mean that nothing happens, basically. Every .csl file I've saved, be it straight from GitHub or via TextEdit, nothing happens after accepting when Zotero asks to install the given file. (also, I'm struggling to get rid of the .txt extension when using a text editor)

I'm sorry for being so vague, and I appreciate your time! Not very familiar with all of this :) I'd happily answer any questions about what steps I'm taking.
  • Sorry about that -- try this instead: https://github.com/adam3smith/custom-csl/blob/master/american-chemical-society-author-date-archived.csl

(the other style did install but was immediately replaced by the current ACS style because styles update automatically in Zotero). This one has a different ID, so Zotero won't recognize it as a previously existing style.
  • (I assume this was cross-posted with my last post?)
  • The file you just sent worked immediately, Adam! Thank you so much :)
  • Yes, I saw your last message right after posting the screenshots.
