[Feature request] Add new items to library via DOI directly via Word Processor Integration

Hi everyone,

for adding new citations to my manuscript that are not yet part of my library, I keep alt-tabbing between my Zotero app and Word processor. Thus, I wanted to propose adding the "magic stick icon" (add entry via identifier) directly in the Word Processor Integration so that you can add a new citation to both the document and your library without using the Zotero app itself.

What do you think?
  • I'm curious about the workflow... how do you find these DOIs while you are writing?

I have a second monitor with a browser to find papers and their DOIs. Adding a citation using Zotero Connector is way more intrusive and click-intensive than just copy-pasting the DOI.

Really? I would think the exact opposite, adding through the connector is just 1 click, instead of :
    1. select the DOI
    2. copy
    3. paste into the relevant form field
(maybe one more button click or Return key press)

This is a honest question. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something?
  • (I don't think there's much of a chance of adding this to the word processor add-in -- it'd just be too much going on there: either it'd overload the interface, or, if you just allowed adding by DOIs from the search bar, would confuse search & add item functionality in potentially problematic ways).

In case that's helpful, the connector can be triggered via a configurable keyboard shortcut.
  • I've now figured out how to properly use the Zotero Connector.

However, there is one more use case:

When you just get the DOIs (for example from a manuscript written by a co-author, or from a co-authors comment on your manuscript, or from a PDF), there is no Zotero Connector possibility. And often you want to just paste this DOI as a reference in your manuscript.

Thus, I still urge the developers to implement this feature - there are more use cases.
  • adomasven, exactly this option I want to have inside the Word processor, not only inside the Zotero app. That's all.
