Available for beta testing: Add annotations directly to word processor documents

In the latest Zotero beta, the word processor plugins feature a new Add Annotation button that lets you insert one or more annotations directly into your document, with active Zotero citations that automatically generate bibliography entries.

Previously, you could add annotations to Zotero notes and insert notes into your document with active citations, but it's no longer necessary to create an intermediate note if you prefer to work directly in your word processor.

Add Annotation opens a new mode in the citation dialog that expands attachments to show individual annotations. You can browse or search for annotations, choose one or more, and then add them to your document, along with active citations and any comments you added. Image and ink annotations are inserted as images.

We hope this helps create a seamless workflow in which you can save files into Zotero, annotate them in the reader, and insert those annotations directly into your document with proper citations.
  • Just to say that, from my perspective, this is a highly useful feature that will speed up my work flow significantly. The new annotation functionality (now implemented in Zotero 9) works really well - many thanks to the developers for their incredible work!
  • Just used this feature for the first time. This is great and also improves my workflow. Can I just ask whether the 'filter annotations' is really just filtering by words in the annotations? I don't see a way for example to filter by tag (which I'd love).

It would be nice if this feature included an easy way to export all my notations for a document. As of now, it seems like I have to manually select each one. I'd like to be able to finish reading and annotating a document, open a doc in my word processor, and quickly dump all my notes into it.

@charlie_mahoney: Not sure what you mean by "manually select each one", but you can use Add Annotation, select all annotations under an attachment, and press Enter/Return to add them all.

From the items list, you can also create a note from all of an item's annotations — or annotations from multiple items — and then use the plugin's Add Note button to insert the entire note into the document.
