Filename Template bug, Zotero 8.0.4, macOS ?

I've encountered what appears to be a bug with the Filename Template settings in Zotero 8.0.4 on macOS 26.3.1.

I had been using a custom Filename Template in previous versions of Zotero. After upgrading to v8, imported files were being renamed based on a default naming scheme, despite the custom template I specified.

I appear to have resolved this by cutting my existing template directives from the input field and re-pasting them back into the input field. Zotero then seems to recognize the custom template. See the screenshots below of the before and after states.

Zotero then prompted me to rename all of the existing files that hadn't been renamed with my custom template since the upgrade to v8.

  • A follow-up: For some reason, the renaming process has not successfully renamed all files with my preferred renaming template. Items in a Group Library have not been renamed, and importing new items into the Group Library continues to use Zotero's default renaming template.
  • Another follow-up: Now that the "rename file from parent metadata" option has been removed, there does not seem to be a way to force Zotero to rename files using the custom template. If I attempt to manually rename the filename in the right-side "Attachment Info" pane, the new renaming button appears adjacent to the manually-renamed Filename. Upon clicking that, Zotero insists on renaming files with a default template instead of my custom name template. In other words, I appear to be stuck with the default filename template for items that are stored in a Group Library.
  • This appears to be similar behavior described here for Group Libraries: https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/comment/507979

As explained in linked thread (https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/comment/508370/#Comment_508370):

Group libraries don't yet support custom filename format templates. It will be configurable by group admins in a future update.
  • Is there a reason this behavior was changed from previous versions of Zotero? To my knowledge, custom filename templates used to work within Group Libraries. Our organization has had workflow guidelines based on it.

If two individuals in the group had different custom filename formats specified, with continuous renaming in place, the filename would change constantly when members introduced changes to the metadata. Therefore, custom filename formats must be synchronized. Only group admins will be able to change them. We're actively working on the new implementation.
  • Makes sense. Thanks.
