duplicated annotation when reopening exported pdf

For given pdf I opened it up in Zotero pdf reader and took some annotations, these are stored in Zotero database and I want to them to be accessible with external pdf reader. So I use File → “Export PDF…”. The annotations on the exported pdf are now accessible with external pdf reader. So far so good.

However, if I now open this exported pdf in Zotero pdf reader, those annotation will be duplicated. One being viewed as "imported" annotations with lock sign, one being the origin annotation that are stored in Zotero database.

This behavior is not ideal though what is happening is Zotero export the annotation to the pdf while still keep the annotations in the database and thus duplication.

Can we reconcile this duplication issue? Moreover, can we make "automatically export /save annotation to pdf every time we close it in Zotero pdf reader" an option to check?
  • Evening, guys. I am having this same issue now and can't seem to find neither a solution anywhere nor someone else (apart from @gs23) having the same problem.
Here's what happens: I open my PDF file using Zotero, I do the reading and annotation (as one normally would), and Save [it] As... before closing it. My goal, in doing so, is to make my annotations visible for people who work with me and use Adobe Reader. The problem though happens every time I reopen a file in my Zotero PDF reader, cause it shows duplicates of every single annotation. And if I read, annotate and Save [it] As... again, next time I'll reopen it, there will be three of every single annotation. And so forth and so on, ad infinitum.

What is it that I'm doing wrong? How to make it stop, please?

  • Yeah, you are duplicating annotations. Check the link above by dstillman.

You now have them in the Zotero database (which will only show in the Zotero reader) and you also have them saved into a new pdf file (the ones with the lock sign), which you then use to replace the original pdf - that is causing the duplication. If you don't replace the original pdf with the newly exported one, no annotations will appear duplicated.

Zotero is designed to work with annotations saved in its database. What you get from "Save As..." is not meant to be put back into Zotero, but can be shared with collaborators via email, etc. It is meant more as an Export and not Save.
