APA style references that contain “with” authors

I figured out how to get Zotero to format references that contain “with” authors in APA style:

Johnstone, L., & Boyle, M. (with Cromby, J., Dillon, J., Harper, D., Kinderman, P., Longden, E., Pilgrim, D., & Read, J.). (2018). The Power Threat Meaning Framework: Towards the identification of patterns in emotional distress, unusual experiences and troubled or troubling behaviour, as an alternative to functional psychiatric diagnosis. British Psychological Society. https://www.bps.org.uk/guideline/power-threat-meaning-framework-full-version

However, I have another reference by the first two authors from 2018, and I have noticed two things that I’m confused by:

1. The reference list puts these two references in the following order, with the 2025 one ahead of the 2018 one, ostensibly because Zotero is counting the “with” orders in generating alphabetical order. Should the order of these references be reversed? And if so, how can I get Zotero to do that?

Johnstone, L., & Boyle, M. (2025). The Power Threat Meaning Framework: An alternative nondiagnostic conceptual system. Journal of Humanistic Psychology, 65(4), 800–817.

Johnstone, L., & Boyle, M. (with Cromby, J., Dillon, J., Harper, D., Kinderman, P., Longden, E., Pilgrim, D., & Read, J.). (2018). The Power Threat Meaning Framework: Towards the identification of patterns in emotional distress, unusual experiences and troubled or troubling behaviour, as an alternative to functional psychiatric diagnosis. British Psychological Society. https://www.bps.org.uk/guideline/power-threat-meaning-framework-full-version

2. In the in-text citations, Zotero is correctly not including the “with” author names, but it is listing the order of the citations in the wrong order, with the 2025 one first (again, probably because it is counting the “with” author names): Johnstone & Boyle, 2025, 2018.

So, to sum up my questions: What should the order of two Johnstone & Boyle sources be in the reference list and in the in-text citations? And, if Zotero is doing it wrong, how can I get Zotero to do it correctly?

Thank you!
  • APA 9.8 specifies that the added contributors should not modify the in-text citation. I would guess from this that the sort order should not change when these contributors appear, though @bwiernik will say if he thinks otherwise. See whether this version of the style works for you:

    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/adunning/styles/f1862def9b161c7d6bbfddbdd6ff9e9a373e956c/apa.csl

With this version of the style, the contributors will also appear with your example entered as a report.
  • That sounds right to me

Thank you both! The APA 7th style link you provided must have updated the version of APA 7th style I had on my Zotero because it corrected the citation and reference order. The earlier dated sources are now listed first, as I thought they should be.

Now if I can just get the page proof folks at the journal where this article was accepted to stop incorrectly reformatting the "with" reference in violation of APA style, I'll be all set.
  • You're very welcome; I'm glad that works!
