Not able to add citations in google docs

I have used Zotero as a reference library for a long time, but have never been able to add citations to a google doc. I have tried 'everything', but most of the time nothing at all happens when I click the zotero menu button and choose anything from the dropdown, some times (don't ask me what I did different) I get a 'zotero is updating your document, pleas wait' message which does not go away. Is anybody able to suggest something I can still do?

    Restart Zotero and refresh Google Docs. Try to use the Google Docs Zotero integration. If no windows appear, look through open browser windows: one might appear for authentication with Google; and open Zotero windows: citation dialog or document preferences should appear, but may not necessarily be shown on top of other windows depending on your system configuration.

    When you see the screen saying "Please wait...", you should look through open Zotero windows (not browser).
