Zotero 7 not saving Publication, Volume, Issue, Pages, or Journal Abbr fields from AMS Journals

Hi, I use the Zotero Connector plugin for Chrome, connected to my local installation of Zotero. Ever since Zotero was upgraded to v7 some months ago, I've noticed that when I click on the Zotero Connector plugin to save a journal article to my library from AMS Journals (journals.ametsoc.org) or Wiley Journals, Zotero no longer saves the Publication, Volume, Issue, Pages, or Journal Abbr fields. That metadata is being saved properly for Elsevier journals, so it's at least not a universal issue, but it's also not an isolated one. It's a hassle to manually input all this info into Zotero. I assume it's some sort of software bug or communications issue with various journal websites. Can this be fixed?

  • Please run through https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting and provide all information requested in the last step if the previous ones don't fix the issue
  • I am having a similar problem with the zotero connector plugin for Chrome. The "word processor plugin troubleshooting" page doesn't address this problem with the plugin for Chrome.
  • Hi, I'm still having this issue. I followed the second link you posted that applies to browser plugins, and none of the suggestions have resolved my issue or don't even apply. It's really only AMS (American Meteorological Society) Journals for which this translator problem is occurring. The plugin is behaving properly for all other journals that I've downloaded from in recent months.

Again, when downloading an article from AMS Journals, some of the metadata populates correctly in Zotero (Item Type, Title, Authors, Date, Language, DOI, Short Title, URL, Accessed, Library Catalog, Extra, Date Added, Modified, Abstract), but several other important metadata fields are blank (Publication, Volume, Issue, Pages, Journal Abbr).

Public URL (though this issue applies to any article that can be found on journals.ametsoc.org, not just this one): https://journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/bams/106/9/BAMS-D-23-0189.1.xml
URL through which I'm accessing it via University of Colorado/UCAR Libraries: https://journals-ametsoc-org.cuucar.idm.oclc.org/view/journals/bams/106/9/BAMS-D-23-0189.1.xml

    Debug ID: D704748587

What it says: Saving to My Library

    Translator: PubFactory Journals

Chrome version: 141.0.7390.123 (Official Build) (arm64)
    Zotero plugin version: 5.0.185
    Zotero version: 7.0.28
  • I can reproduce this in Chrome. Those fields are present when saving from Firefox. We'll investigate.

@jared_lee We have released a fix for this issue with Zotero Connector 5.0.187. Make sure your extensions are up to date and let us know if it works.
  • Thanks @adomasven. I just updated my extension to that version, and it worked for me! The only metadata field of relevance that's still missing is Journal Abbr, but that's a minor issue. If memory serves, I don't remember Zotero ever properly pulling down the Journal Abbr field from AMS Journals. But at least now I don't have to manually populate the journal name, volume, pages, etc., anymore, which is a big help.

The citation data that AMS provides us doesn't include journal abbreviations. By default, though, Zotero automatically abbreviates journal titles and doesn't use the value in the Journal Abbreviation field.
