McGill Guide - Not formatting book chapters correctly?

No matter what I do, Zotero pushes out a poorly-formatted citation with only the book chapter's author listed (not the book's editors) and a short form of the book title (which is incorrect).

E.g., Jeffrey A Frankel, “The Natural Resource Curse: A Survey of Diagnoses and Some Prescriptions” in Commod Price Volatility Incl Growth Low-Income Ctries (2012).

Instead of:

Jeffrey A Frankel, “The Natural Resource Curse: A Survey of Diagnoses and Some Prescriptions” in Rabah Arezki, Catherine A Pattillo, et al, eds, Commodity Price Volatility And Inclusive Growth In Low-Income Countries (2012).

I've tried including both the book and the book section as separate entries (they have different authors and the book section citation format only allows for one cohesive "set" of authors to be included rather than distinguishing between the author of the chapter vs the editors of the book). I can't get the entries to link together, however. I feel like I'm losing my mind.

When I look at the style on Zotero.org, however, I can see properly formatted citations for chapters in edited volumes.

I've been at this for hours. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  • Our citation style outputs it correctly like so:

Mares, Isabela, “Firms and the welfare state: When, why, and how does social policy matter to employers?” in Peter A Hall & David Soskice, eds, Varieties of capitalism The institutional foundations of comparative advantage (New York: Oxford University Press, 2001) 184.
Your hint that "on Zotero.org, however, I can see properly formatted citations" confirms that it's wrong metadata input. ;)
Check that you have the editors actually entered as editors.
This is what it needs to look like:

Linking a book and book chapter has nothing to do with that. It's purely about that one item and the correct metadata for said item.
  • Thank you so much! Would you be able to answer one more question for me? Why is the short form output for edition, "edn," when the correct short form (according to the McGill guide) is ed?

For example, I filled out the citing information (correctly!!!) for the second edition of a book with one author and yet this is the result:

Hilaire McCoubrey, International Humanitarian Law: Modern Developments in the Limitation of Warfare, 2nd edn (New York, NY: Routledge, 2019) at 12.

    It should be 2nd ed.
  • You probably have "2nd edn" entered in "Edition" field. You should keep only "2".
  • edited today at 1:44am
I have the edition listed as "2". It is doing this with all of my books that are 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. editions. Please see attached!

  • Yeah, my bad, I mixed up the styles while checking and replying. I get the same. Interestingly, I do see "ed" in the online visual editor, but not in the Zotero editor. Someone with more competences will be able to shed some lights.
  • The locale that's set for this style, en-GB, has "edn".

Can you share the page from McGill in a screenshot that shows the correct "edition" display?
