formatting footnotes in british style

I'm using Chicago style, and I've noticed footnotes are in USA style - meaning dots and commas are within inverted commas rather than outside. However, my text is in British style - with commas and dots outside inverted commas. I'm trying to understand if there's a way to automatically turn all footnotes in British style - doing them in the text is not fully automatizable for a number of reasons, hence I'm trying to look for a solution in Zotero...thx a lot for your help!!
  • You should be able to just set the language to English (UK) in the document preferences and get standard British punctuation.
  • Thanks! I tried before posting, and it didn't work (the document is very big). I tried again after, and eventually, it did! Thanks a lot for your quick help!!
  • it seems that by changing the language and then refreshing the notes, zotero asks me to confirm modified notes that were changes only in terms of language setting, and I have to click no to save those changes if I want to keep the notes updatable in the future... does it make sense? It seems inconvenient, I'm basically going through the all document with Zoter saying no to any changes derived from this language setting modification I did to move from US to British style...
  • so it's done now and I reverted to US to keep notes updatable. what's weird now is that series of note referring to the same book are rendered in their entirety while before they were shortcutted after the first. See image attached. Should i refresh again to get them properly sorted again?

  • You can change the citation language (in Document Preferences within the Zotero plugin for Word) without unlinking the citations, just as you can switch to any style.

Shortened notes are now author–title by default in the 18th edition of Chicago. There is a variant for subsequent author-only notes (as well for as the ibid. and title-only options that the manual allows) if you prefer this.
  • Hello, thank you for your reply. I'm not sure what happened; for some reason, some notes were apparently unlinked, so I had to go through all of them and reject the changes I made concerning the language setting. Eventually, I went back to the full notes formatted in US style.

not a big deal, I'm just unsure why it happened... I'm tempted to switch language again into UK now that it's done but afraid to end up again in having to manually confirm or refuse changes...
  • It really ought to work. You could perhaps try switching to something similar such as MHRA style, then back to Chicago with British English?
  • Just do it in a copy of the file. Should work though.
(Also, read this for reasons why your citations may have unlinked. https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/existing_citations_not_detected)
