Transfering my annotations from old pdf to new pdf

Suppose I have made some annotations on a lecture note or an arXiv preprint. Later, I found out that a new version of the PDF is available with minor updates. Now, I would want to replace the old PDF with the new one, while transferring the annotations on it as well. How can I do it?

You can right-click → Show File and swap in the new PDF, but any changes to the document would likely cause some or all of the annotations to be in the wrong positions. So it would only really be an option for extremely minor changes between versions (e.g., a typo that didn't affect line wrapping).
