can't change citation style

I use Chicago Manual of Style (full note, short title subsequent). It has worked for me and my students in the past, but now, I don't seem to be able to apply that style any more. When I select it in Preferences>Style Manager, it doesn't hold. As soon as I go to click OK, the highlight on that style disappears. Then, when I try to insert a citation that is identical to the one before but with a different page number, I get the entire citation again.
I have tried many times to get it to switch to the short-title subsequent, but I can't get it to work. Thanks for any assistance!
  • You change citation styles in the Zotero Word add-on under Document Preferences. The Style manager is only for installing or uninstalling styles.
  • Thanks but I am still getting the full citation, even though I have checked the document preferences and it shows the correct Chicago style (full-note short-title subsequent).
I'm using Word in Microsoft 365 on a Windows 11 computer
  • Make sure automatically update citations is checked in the Document preferences
  • I'm sorry, but that was checked. And I just tried it all again. I deleted and the reinstalled the Chicago 17 full note, short title subsequent, and I keep telling it to use that style in the Style Manager, and the update citations box is checked. It still gives me the full citation. Sorry to be a pest, but I have students who will need to know how to fix this, also.
  • Can you post a screenshot of your document preferences (again, the style manager isn't relevant). Also, how are you adding the citations to the document?
  • I've tried pasting, I've tried dragging, and I've tried clicking on both Firefox and Chrome to add a screenshot and all I get is the URL so I don't know how to send you a screenshot of the doc preferences. These are the settings as they appear in the document preferences: Chic Manual, 17th, (full note, short title), Language: English' Display Citations as Footnotes; Store Citations as Fields; Automatically update citations. At the bottom it says "switch to a different Word Processor"
To add citations, I click on the Zotero tab and then select Add/Edit Citations. I use the modern search bar, find the source and add a page number. Then hit enter.
  • You can just link to a screenshot. Be it GDrive or something like imgbb.com
  • You'll just see the URL for the screenshot until you actually post the comment (or preview it). What you describe sounds like the right settings though.
The style is definitely correct and handles shortened subsequent notes correctly for me. Have you tested this in an entirely new document, just inserting the same citation twice? Does that work?
  • You're a genius! It is just in that one document. I won't bother you with trying to figure out why. I tried restarting my computer and updating the style and all that rigamarole and all I had to do was try another doc! So, thank you VERY much.
And thank you also for always answering so quickly. I do so appreciate your help over the years.
