Word Plugin: Zotero experienced an error updating your document.

Debug ID: D1503635875
Report ID: 1401045822

My Word crashes upon trying to add a citation. I generally encounter this issue a lot, almost daily. I usually solve it by pasting the text to a new document. This time, I investigated by removing paragraphs step by step and thought I found the problematic citation. However, I realized the citation-free paragraph below caused issues even on its own. After trying a few times, the whole document worked again. After a few more tries, it now crashes even with the problematic citation removed. I really don't understand whats going on. I have tried restarting Zotero and Word, changing the citation style, made sure “Typing replaces selected text” is checked and that I have no other Word plugins.

Steps to reproduce (irregularly):
1. Open Word document
2. Click Add/Edit Citation
3. Wait for crash and error message

Thanks for your help!
  • Crashes as in Word closes or freezes? What full Word version?
  • Word freezes for a second and then closes. Word version 2412 Build 18324.20194 Click-to-run.
  • Do you have a table of contents or other advanced Word fields in this document? Does it help if you remove those temporarily?

I used a list with two levels for headings and subheadings. Removing that did not resolve the issue so far.

    Furthers steps taken:
    - Ensure that Word and Zotero are not running with admin privileges
    - Ensure there are no spaces in the file name
    - Disable virus and threat protection
    - Disable app and browser control
    - Change/disable UAC as specified in this thread https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/114770/zotero-7-zotero-experienced-an-error-updating-your-document
    - Turn on Win 8 compatibility mode for Zotero

    nothing has worked so far.
  • For anybody having similar issues: I believe automatic hyphenation was causing the issue, though I am still not sure.
  • Where is the automatic hyphenation option in Word? It might be possible that it got fixed with a Word update.
  • It is under layout -> hyphenation -> automatic. I can't tell if this was really the fix as I could not reproduce the issue consistently before and finished my project shortly after.
