Zotero deleted all my articles/files

Zotero just deleted all my references. My years of reference work. This is because somehow Zotero's cloud lost all my data and then started deleting all my stuff due to auto sync. I have nothing now.

I tried to get the zotero.sqlite.bak file, and after I imported it into Zotero, I watched it delete all my documents one by one.

What can I say? What can I do?

Zotero didn't delete all your items. You or someone with access to your library (e.g., on a shared computer where you left yourself logged in) did, either by deleting all items manually or running Replace Online Library from an empty library.

But you should be able to restore the items from one of the automatic backups. Note the step there about using Replace Online Library. If you just copy zotero.sqlite.bak into place, Zotero will simply reapply all the remote deletions, since it's effectively just an outdatd version of your library from before the deletions were made.

Attachment files wouldn't be restored this way, but if you were using Zotero Storage, we may be able to relink any files that had already been uploaded to your online library after you restore the data.
  • Dear dstillman,

Please allow me to express my endless gratitude to you. I just used "Replace Online Library" functionality to upload my local zotero.sqlite back-up to online library (only the title). At least, I can switch on the synchronization and go back to work. I hope the answer of dstillman can help the other people.

But I need to make it clear that I never thought that someone (especially myself) accidentally deleted the online library. I think somehow Zotero lost my online data and this happened. I hope other friends who see this post will save your database back-up frequently, so that at least you can keep the title of the article.

I promise you Zotero didn’t do this. If you email us at support@zotero.org with a link to this thread, we can tell you exactly when this happened and the IP address that did it, but it wasn’t from our end.
  • Many thanks dstillman. I just send you the link to my profile & thread. I really want to know what happened to my local & online library.
