On Zotero7.0.11-beta.8+d57392d81 (64-bit), PDF page text blur problem after update

1970678928 I automatically updated to zotero7.0.11-beta.8+d57392d81 (64-bit) version, the pdf page text suddenly became blurred, as shown in the picture, so I read the discomfort, please find out why!

  • I'm not sure what you mean here. That text doesn't look blurry. It's not high-resolution text, so if you're on a high-res display, it might look low-res. Is that what you mean? Are you saying that changed?

Do you see this if you disable all plugins and restart Zotero?

Do you see it in the release version of Zotero 7.0.10?
  • I did not have the fuzzy PDF problem in the official version of Zotero 7.0.10, but when Zotero automatically updated to version 7.0.11, all of the PDF text suddenly became a little fuzzy, like a layer of mist
  • Do you see this if you disable all plugins and restart Zotero?
  • When I closed the plugin and restarted Zotero, the problem still existed, the following image is the same document in Zotero and wps on the comparison chart display, you can clearly see that Zotero's display of the text is a little blurry.

  • Can you try the latest beta and see if that fixes it for you?
  • I'm thrilled to say that after updating to the latest version, the above problem has been solved! Thank you so much for your prompt reply. You've solved the user's problem very quickly, and I want to commend you on your excellent work!
  • Great, this is now fixed in Zotero 7.0.11. Thanks for reporting.
  • Hi, I just updated it to 7.0.12-beta.1+31bbf2acf . And also find this issue on some of the PDF file (not all). The fonts appear blurry and not as sharp as when viewed with Foxit Reader for the same file. I have attached a screenshot below for reference. When the letters are enlarged, certain differences become noticeable.
Plugins disabled and restarted, thank you in advance for any insights or suggestions.

  • I think I see the same problem in 7.0.12-beta.1+31bbf2acf. When first opening a PDF, it is often somewhat blurry, like in this screenshot:
    https://s3.amazonaws.com/zotero.org/images/forums/u5025031/ankf9cmxgk3syehwd68p.png

Zooming in and out again "sharpens" the image so that it looks normal again:

  • I think I can specify the problem a bit more:
When zooming in or out in a document with Ctrl+Scroll Wheel, the text is a bit blurry during the "jump" between two different zoom levels, but then there's a kind of short flash before the image gets sharp again. This bluriness during zooming is the same that I see when first opening a PDF.
  • I only see the blurry text at the "Zoom to page height" zoom level, regardless if it's upon opening a PDF or later. And it only occurs for some PDFs.

  • For me it doesn't seem to be related to "Zoom to page height" (in fact most PDFs look fine after setting Zoom to page height). I'll keep my eyes open for more helpful information, though.
  • Another addition: while "Zooming to page height" doesn't seem to be at fault, "Zoom to page width" might be the culprit in my case.
  • Let us know if you’re able to reproduce this in the latest beta.

It's a little better with version 7.1-beta.1+bc3c05d06 (64-bit) on Linux, but the problem still exists somewhat albeit with different steps to reproduce.

Previously, it would be consistently blurry at the "Zoom to page height" level. Now, it is usually clear at all levels. However, I now find that toggling between various levels can yield blurriness when it was previously sharp.

Zoom to page width is initially sharp:

After visiting various zoom levels and returning to "Zoom to page width", it is blurry:

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to come up with reliable steps to reproduce yet.

From those screenshots, one could argue that the blurry version is actually "smoother", but to my eyes in the actual app it does lean towards being blurry. At most zoom levels, the image is more like the first one rather than the second.

  • For the paper linked in my previous post, I observe the following behavior.

    1. Open the PDF, and set the zoom level to "Zoom to Page Width".
    2. Close the tab.
    3. Reopen the PDF (which defaults to Zoom to Page Width) -> clear.
    4. Zoom in one level via ctrl + -> clear.
    5. Zoom to page width -> blurry.
    6. Close and reopen the tab (which defaults to Zoom to Page Width) -> clear.
  • I can still reproduce this with version 7.1-beta.8+2afbe030d (64-bit) on Linux. The PDF I linked to above now seems fine, but others are still blurry at some zoom levels. With this version, "Zoom to Page Width" with "Odd Spreads" seems to be the problematic one for me.
  • This happens to me as well.
I hope a solution will be found. It is really a pity.

I also noticed that if I zoom in a lot (ctrl +), the PDF reader starts computing the view, and the deeper I go, the longer the computation takes. However, once computed, the resolution is top-level.
