So, I just found that I get the referenced memory error on all PDFs if I do not first open Acrobat Pro. That is, if the Acrobat Pro software IS NOT open on my Windows 11 laptop, any PDF opened via my Zotero library that subsequently initiates Acrobat Pro, will produce the referenced memory error for the first PDF (that starts the software) and any after it. However, I have found that if I open Acrobat Pro FIRST, but do not open any PDF, and THEN I open PDFs directly from my Zotero library, I no longer get the referenced memory error.
This is still an annoying little bug but I hope this helps identify the issue for a future fix! I'm still very much liking the new Zotero 7.
I believe we've only gotten one other report of this, so it's something specific to very few systems.
If you're running any non-standard security software, you could try temporarily disabling it. You could also try updating Windows, reinstalling Acrobat, disabling third-party utilities, testing with other PDF apps, etc.
1. If Zotero is the first application to open Adobe Acrobat, then Windows will throw that annoying application error at that time and subsequently every time anything opens a pdf file (e.g., opening a pdf file from your desktop, from Zotero, from EndNote... )
2. If Adobe Acrobat is launched NOT by Zotero (e.g., you opened Acrobat directly from Windows before launching a pdf file from Zotero), then Windows is happy at time of launch and whenever a PDF file is opened, including by/from Zotero.
Sorry, but all fingers point to how Zotero invokes Acrobat as the culprit.
I've tried all types of troubleshooting I could find for similar Adobe errors but the only thing that helped was running Adobe in Windows 8 compatibility mode. I, however, don't want to run Adobe like that.
It seems like the little work around of opening Adobe first seems to also be working as mentioned above so I fully agree it's something to do with Zotero launching Adobe.
That said, thanks to those who posted and commented because I can live with the workaround for now! And I found this pretty easily searching on duckduckgo.
Even if this is only being triggered for you by Zotero launching Acrobat, it's an error in Acrobat, so only they would be able to debug it. (And there are reports online of this happening when launched from Outlook and other programs as well, so it's not specific to Zotero.)

(That thread is also about Outlook, not Zotero. Again, this isn't a Zotero issue in any way.)
